SITE UPDATE 22.10.2000

Dear Friend

We've had news ..... a couple of very important e-mails have come our way!

Firstly from Deborah Starkings at the PDNPA, about the Public Meeting this Friday 27 October:

TO:Nine Ladies List
SUBJECT:Planning Control Committee 27/10/00

Dear Sparky,

I've just seen a copy of the e-mail which was sent to your distribution lists. You are welcome to attend the meeting, which will be held at the Authority's offices at Aldern House, Bakewell at 10 am on 27/10/2000.

You are welcome to speak at the meeting, but you have to apply in writing for a three minute slot. The letter has to be signed and therefore e-mail is not acceptable (even with a digital signature).

The letter should be sent/delivered to:

Committee Services
Aldern House
Baslow Road
Bakewell
Derbyshire
DE45 1AE

and must arrive before 5pm the Wednesday before the committee ie 25 October.

Sincerely,

Deborah Starkings

As we stated before, the protestors on site have already arranged a three-minute slot and hopefully we'll be able to bring you details of what was said at the meeting.

The second important e-mail is from Jon Humble at English Heritage:

TO:Nine Ladies List
SUBJECT:ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONSERVATION WORK AT NINE LADIES

Dear Save Nine Ladies Campaigners

The archaeological conservation work at Nine Ladies will begin next week with a metrical survey. This work will 'map' the layout of the site and record ground levels. Our archaeological contractors from the University of Nottingham will not be on site over Halloween.

Beginning in early November the rest of the work will focus on limited below ground investigation of a sample of the monument (8%), balancing a minimum of disturbance with the maximum return of information. The archaeologists will be pleased to describe and explain what they are doing and what is being found.

The work will be concluded by the end of the month. Daryl Garton from the University of Nottingham, who will be leading the archaeological team, says she is hoping for a very late Indian summer!

Best wishes

Jon Humble
Inspector of Ancient Monuments
English Heritage (East Midlands Region)

We hope to bring you more news as and when we hear it.
