Dear Friend

SUBJECT:MESSAGE FROM ENGLISH HERITAGE

Dear Save Nine Ladies Campaigners

At last we have resolved the "logistical problems regarding access" for the archaeological investigation of Nine Ladies which is needed to decide how best to conserve the monument for now and the future. Our contractors are currently sorting out when they will be able to carry out the work. When dates are confirmed, I will let you know!

Since my last e-mail in July, English Heritage has continued to work with the Peak District National Park Authority towards seeking a solution to the quarrying issues which affect Stanton Moor. In July an encouraging meeting was held with the landowners, the mineral companies, Peak Park planners and ourselves. On the back of this meeting we hope that it may well be possible to identify a solution based on the companies relinquishing their commercial interests in Stanton Moor. The companies will expect, however, to obtain planning permission for stone extraction elsewhere as a trade-off. At first sight this may seem more like shifting the problem than solving it, yet if this does prove possible it would be on condition that "elsewhere" is a less environmentally sensitive area! A series of guiding principles which would enable this approach are currently under consideration by the Parish Councils, and shortly will be put forward for formal endorsement by the Peak Park Planning Committee.

English Heritage has a statutory duty to secure the preservation of ancient monuments and naturally we are very concerned about the threats to the historic environment from quarrying - and particularly the old permissions which were granted before the use of current, much more rigorous planning criteria. We are using our own ways and means to influence Government on this issue.

I'd be pleased to answer any questions you may have - either by e-mail or by visiting the camp.

Regards

We'll keep you informed of further developments as and when they happen.

Bye for now,
