QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
- Q.
- Who wants to dig up the stone anyway?
- A.
- Stancliffe Stone Ltd.
- Q.
- What do they want it for?
- A.
- To dig it up, probably to export abroad where it can fetch high prices.
- Q.
- Why can't they just dig up some foreign stone?
- A.
- Because some countries' Environmental Protection Laws make it too awkward
for them! It's often cheaper to import rock from Britain than to comply with regulations concerning
digging it up locally.
- Q.
- Doesn't living in the trees damage them?
- A.
- YES - but not half as severely as quarrying would!
- Q.
- Will jobs be lost if the quarry is blocked?
- A.
- NO. The two quarries are currently not operating, and the surrounding area
is mainly unfarmed.
- Q.
- Is it true that the Nine Ladies site is now considerably more open due
to people felling the trees for firewood?
- A.
- Not really. The site is open. There are one or two idiots who
cut down trees for firewood, but there is so much dead wood lying around, cutting trees is too much like
hard work for most people.
- Q.
- Is it true that one of the people intending to protect the site backed
a truck into one of the stones snapping it off thus irrevocably damaging what he sought to protect?
- A.
- There was an incident sometime in the early 1990's, when a careless camper
backed a van into the King Stone and broke off a piece. The stone has since been propped together; the
incident was nothing to do with the current protest.
- Q.
- I have the camp site phone number, but this doesn't work from
outside the UK.
- A.
- You should be able to call mobile phones from outside the UK just as
easily as land lines, the procedure is the same.
- Dial your international access code (usually 00) and wait for another dial tone.
- Then dial 44 (for UK),
- followed by the site number but omit the initial 0.
If this doesn't work the chances are that their phone is just switched off. Try calling another
number, preferably a land line, in the UK. Also, this may be obvious but check you really have the
right number - you'll find the latest number(s) on the contacts page.
- Q.
- What do I do with the file "flier02.zip"?
- A.
- You need to unZIP it using a program such as winZIP, and then you will have
another file called "flier02.rtf". This will load into Microsoft Word. The two sides
of the flier will appear side by side. Photocopy the printout onto both sides of the paper. The front and
back will be swaped on the reverse side, leaving you with two double sided fliers that can be separated
with scissors or a sliding guillotine.
- Q.
- You say that .rtf files can be loaded into Microsoft Word. Why are you
pointlessly promoting a multinational monopolist corporation!?
- A.
- We take your point entirely; there are other programs which can read
.rtf files. The only reason we mentioned Word was for the benefit of the majority of people out there
who only know Microsoft. Putting in any alternative instructions could have caused confusion. And
users of systems other than Microsoft Windows tend to know enough to work out for themselves how to do
certain things. From the point of view of campaigning to save the Nine Ladies stone circle, letting
someone use Windows if that way they can do something to help, is more important than showing people
that there are other ways to do something. Users of alternative OS's are certainly welcome here!
- Q.
- I tried to join the mailing list but haven't received any confirmatory
message yet. What's happened?
- A.
- Our mailing list server is not active all the time, since it runs on our
local machine - we only download the subscriptions and upload the replies when we go online. This should
ideally be every day, but in practice it sometimes isn't. However, if you have heard nothing from us for a
week, then the most likely explanation is that you mis-typed your e-mail address.
If this happens, we'll put a message on the
message board asking you to try again.
- Q.
- Why did I get an e-mail saying I was already on the mailing list?
- A.
- You probably sent two copies of the subscription e-mail. Our mailing list
server saw the first copy and added your name to the list. Then it saw the second, found your name was
already on the list and sent out an error message.
- Q.
- I tried to unsubscribe from the mailing list, but I keep getting
e-mails.
- A.
- This can happen if you have multiple e-mail accounts. You need to send the
unsubscribe message from the same account as the original subscribe message, otherwise our mailing list
server will not recognise you.
- Q.
- I tried to send you details of a link, but got an error message.
- A.
- It took us awhile to figure this one out ..... but basically the form only
works if you access it directly from the index page. If you use the theme filtering function, it breaks
down.
