Shropshire Regimental Museum

The Shropshire Regimental Museum...
was established in Shrewsbury Castle in 1985. Before then, the regimental    collections were housed in Copthorne Barracks and in the drill halls at Coleham and Sundorne.


The displays were completely refurbished following a terrorist fire-bomb attack in 1992 and the Museum re-opened in 1995.

Open : 10.00 to 4.00 Tuesdays - Saturdays incl. until Easter
            10.00 to 5.00 seven days per week, Easter to end Sept.

Admission : Local borough residents, all students & all children : free.
                   Others : Adults £2-00 ; concessions £1-00.


Gift shop : with souvenirs, books, regimental blazer badges, ties, buttons,
                 crested china etc.
Car-parking in castle grounds only by prior arrangement.
Disabled access to both main floors. Toilet facilities for disabled.
There are no catering facilities in the Castle, but food may be consumed in the Castle grounds.

The Museum displays the collections of the county's military units:

the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment   1755-1881.
the 85th King's Light Infantry   1759-1881.
the King's Shropshire Light Infantry   1881-1968.

the Shropshire Yeomanry   1795-1995
the Shropshire Royal Horse Artillery   1860-1967
the Militia, Volunteers and Territorials of Shropshire.


There is also a display of Lord Lieutenancy items, a new Modern Army
exhibition and displays relating the history of the Castle itself.
