From 1995 to 1998, I ran my own new media company called lush. I produced
both independent work as well as specific commissions.
Independent
work included a lush. branded journey through the underground world of drum
and bass. Junglism moves away from artist-based CD-ROM's towards looking
at a genre of music and the culture that surrounds it. This product was
a hybrid between a game and multimedia and as such went beyond simple 'click
and view' interfaces without encouraging competitiveness as in a lot of
gameplay. I made use of a virtual character that introduced and hosted the
product. Our virtual MC was based on MC Det, an Original Junglist. Normally
CD-ROM land is very lonely, abandoned mixing toys and little active engagement.
The idea behind Virtual Det was to try to provide a travelling companion.
Clients included Real World Multimedia Studios and Grant Naylor for whom I built a Red Dwarf web site. lush. were commissioned by The Arts Council of England to produce a piece entitled Ed OS for Emotional Computing, which looked to parody the largely user-unfriendly experience of most people who initially encounter computers and their interfaces.
I was Production Director at Zone (UK) Ltd., my responsibilities ranged from producing the original Vid Zone consoles to contributions to UnZip (the UK's first CD-ROM magazine) published in 1995.
