Team Role Profiler

Welcome to the Team Role Profiler.

The Team Role Profiler comprises a series of seven JavaScript driven questionnaires each of which relates to a particular situation/aspect of teamwork. Each questionnaire comprises eight statements that describe various attitudes or behaviours. You are asked to consider how you do (or might) act in each situation and distribute 10 points across the eight attitude/behaviour statements. Your aim should be to apportion the points in direct proportion to what you believe is the relevance of the statement to your actual attitude/behaviour in that situation. You may score all of the eight, some of them, or only one - so long as you distribute all 10 points. At the end, you will be presented with a 'profile' that you can print out and compare with those of the other members of your team.

Profiling Models

There are many 'profiling' models which can be applied to teamwork. The one used here is based on R M Belbin's work described in his book "Management Teams", (Heinemann, 1981). This is a widely used model, is based on rigorous research and is primarily concerned with identifying the range of contributions each member of a team is likely to make. This is both the strength and the weakness of the model.

A strength because it is a dynamic concept and allows individuals to act differently according to their situation - which depends on both their interaction with the other members of the team and with the environment of the task. A weakness because its predictive capacity is limited by the accuracy of the answers to the questions. The wider the experience of teamwork, the more accurate the answers (generally). Accuracy is also affected by unrealistic answers caused by unduly pessimistic or optimistic estimations of behaviour.

If these caveats are accepted, and the self-assessments made as objectively as possible, then the resulting profile is likely to be a useful tool for examining the way you work in a team. Here are a few points to consider:

One last point, if you want to understand how you work in a team your own profile is just a starting point. Get everyone in the team to complete a profile and then use those as a basis for discussion. But don't expect the profiles, no matter how well done, to provide all the answers. People make teams and if you really want to understand how to make the most of your team then you need to find a way of lowering barriers, encouraging people to share their feelings rather than the words.
