Social Scenery

In those times when we're not tearing our hair out over the latest production, the Oldland Players are still working hard - on the social side of life. We arrange a variety of events, to offer something for everyone. Theatre trips, not surprisingly, are a popular feature and we aim for a mix of visits to other local amateur productions with visits to professional shows.

Every year, being true Brits we don our warmest woollies and rain hats to see outdoor summer productions in glorious surroundings such as Ashton Court or Blaise Castle, two wonderful venues on the outskirts of Bristol.

We have an Annual Dinner at a different venue each year in the summer months. Last year was at a Vineyard in the Cheddar Valley (alas, since closed) and for this year we're investigating dining as we float along the River Avon at Bath on a barge. Christmas sees us getting together in one of the local hostelries for some festive cheer. Picnics are also popular, ten-pin bowling, treasure hunts, ghost walks and go-karting - we'll have a go at anything!

And running right through the year is our participation in the local Skittles league. We play every week in the Oldland Village league, which is played at the Village Club. We thought long and hard on a name for the team - something which sums us up neatly. And, of course, it could only be "The Luvvies", lead by excellent skittles player and eternal optimist, Maurice Townsend. At the end of a rip-roaring first season we romped home in 19th place .... out of 19. We weren't downhearted though, as along with the wooden spoon came a consolation prize of £25, which we instantly invested in the bar at the Presentation Dance. Five years on we're coming along quite nicely, sitting around the half-way point in the league - very good for our self-respect but no cash prize!

And if you wan't to join in, but you don't fancy treading the boards, then you can always join as a patron.
