News from our partners overseas--Autumn '05

In June, Felicity Derry-Thomas (who heads up the SW area) and Anne Tregarthen made a second visit to Zambia and Tanzania.  Here are some extracts from Felicity's journal while in Zambia with Kathy Harding.

…. Lunch with White Mwale who runs Muzuzika Orphanage. Kathy says he carries the goods we provide on the bus for hundreds of miles..….At Mfuwe airport I see a table with animal carvings made by former poachers.  I ask the carpenter where he gets his tools and he says a charity in England--yes it's O.S!..…. Chainda School and another great welcome.  The girls are all wearing summer dresses and the boys are in grey shorts and trousers donated by a school in Tavistock.  They look so proud of themselves in their new uniforms…… Misisi Compound/Township presents a total contrast.  It is an area of appalling deprivation with thousands living check by jowl with no sanitation or water. Noise, smell and squalor--but there is hope in the midst of all this. Pastor Nkomo takes us to a small shed where about 17 beautiful young women with babies are learning dressmaking, weaving, knitting and caring skills.

Letters of thanks have been received from Muzuzika Orphanage who care for 300 vulnerable children, and the House of Moses (who look after babies), for items provided by our partner Kathy Harding (NASAD), sent in O.S. containers. The Zambian-Italian Orthopaedic Hospital were most appreciative of the six orthopaedic crutches and three orthopaedic walking sticks they received.

Martha was born with water on the brain.  Her mother carried her on her back for 9 years.  Now they have a wheelchair--sent by O.S.
