The Voyage of the Arctic Tern by Hugh Montgomery

Review from The Times (29 May 2002)
    ...
Fortunately, Montgomery was never warned by publishers' readers and agents that a long novel in verse was never going to be the next Harry Potter. Montgomery, an intensive care consultant and scientific resarcher, wrote Voyage of the Arctic Tern purely for the entertainment of his godchildren.
The most lasting children's books are usually those written for pleasure alone and the result is a tour de force -- a beautifully illustrated (by Nick Poulis), completely accessible, highly atmospheric adventure story about piracy on the Spanish Main, ghosts, revenge and redemption -- written entirely in verse.
Just by itself, Montgomery's story of the Flying Dutchman-style fisherman who is doomed to wander the earth until he has paid for betraying his village to pirates would have made a fairly good yarn. But writing it as a long, conversational ballad, using a variety of verse styles to suit the pace of each chapter, was a very clever stroke.
The verse is sometimes a little bumpy -- but it shows children that poetry can be accessible, understandable and even mimic the rhythms of modern speech.
