Haunted Houses
Levens Hall

Location: nr Kendal, Cumbria
Origin: 16th/17th Century
Background: The present house
was built in 1580 on the the site of a 12th Century Pele Tower .
The house is a splendid example of Elizabethan architecture. The
gardens are more modern, they were laid in the 18th Century. This
is the Grey Lady's story.
Story: I showed them. Those stuck-up
people at the house. Thought they could turn away a starving woman
and not get punished for it. I knocked on their door and very
politely asked for food and shelter. They saw I was a gypsy and
turned me away. Didn't want the likes of me in their precious
house.
With my dying breath I cursed them. No son would
inherit until the year the River Kent didn't flow and a white fawn was
born in the park. They had a herd of Norwegian black fallow deer;
white offspring were rare. It worked. No son inherited until 1896 when
the river froze and a white fawn was born.
They should have had more respect for a starving
woman. I still wander around the grounds and outside in the
road. If you see me; let me in.
