Haunted Houses
Clandon House
Location: West Clandon,
Surrey
Origin: 18th Century
Background: The present
mansion dates from 1730. The gardens, designed by Lancelot
"Capability" Brown, have not changed since they were laid out
in 1770. The house was built by the Venetian architect, Giacomo
Leoni, for the 2nd Lord Onslow. This is his wife's story.
Story: It was to be our home. A lovely
place where my husband and I could be happy. My husband got his
fortune from me but that did not change things between us. We were
together and that is all that mattered. I was so looking forward
to the completion of the house. Giacomo Leoni was such a talented
architect.
Alas, it wasn't meant to be. I died before the
house was completed. Although I never got to live in it with my
husband, I still visit occasionally. I am the lady in the cream
satin dress.
