Hayle, Cornwall

Hayle, situated in St Ives Bay in Cornwall is famous for its history of copper and tin mining. By the late 18th century Hayle was established as an industrial centre smelting copper ore and numerous factories had been built on the eastern area of the town. This was of course helped by the natural distribution centre of the Hayle Estuary. By the close of the 18th century, Hayle had developed to be an important port and one of the main engineering centres of Southern England through mine engineering and ship building.

Today, much of the heavy industry in Hayle has closed and Hayle is developing into a prime holiday resort popular for self catering accommodation. However, Hayle is not only popular with tourists, the estuary has become an important feeding ground for wildfowl and wading birds.

Beach lovers are well catered for in Hayle with three miles of golden sands and high sand dunes. The beaches are popular with surfers and windsurfers as well as other watersports.

Paradise Park at Hayle is known for its remarkable collection of exotic birds and its conservation work. The park has numerous fascinating species and is the location of the World Parrot Trust. It is also home to the Cornish Otter Sanctuary and a Special Breeds farm. There are flight displays by majestic birds of prey and for young children there are donkey rides and a miniature railway. A souvenir shop, a cafe and a friendly pub.

Other attractions in Hayle include a Bowling Alley, a lighthouse and of course, a walk around the town.

Hayle is also an ideal location from which to visit other nearby resorts such as Penzance and St Ives.
