Weymouth, Dorset

Weymouth has been a port for many centuries. Evidence shows that Roman Galleys sailed up the River Wey as far as Radipole where the goods could be unloaded. The Romans captured Maiden Castle in AD43 and the estuary of the River Wey came into regular use as a port around this date.

Today, Weymouth is a popular seaside resort catering for the many thousands of holiday makers that flock to the town each year. The award winning golden sandy beach is very popular especially in warm weather, all usual beach facilities are on hand such as trampolines, volleyball court and of course, Punch and Judy.

As you would expect from a major holiday resort, the shopping centre in Weymouth is home to a number of national chain stores which are complimented by small speciality shops selling arts and crafts and other souvenirs of your holiday. The promenade is also host to a number of amusement arcades with childrens rides and fruit machines.

Weymouth harbour supports a fleet of fishing vessels and a number of private yachts and cruisers. Several times per day traffic is stopped whilst the road bridge is lifted to allow the passage of sailing ships into the harbour. If you fancy a day trip to Guernsey, Condor Ferries operate a direct service to Guernsey from Weymouth daily throughout the summer season.

Other attractions include The Timewalk and Brewery Days which allows visitors to experience six hundred years of Weymouth and Portland's history. The Weymouth Sealife Centre allows visitors the opportunity to meet sealife creatures close at hand. Weymouth also holds a street carnival and other events throughout the year such as music festivals, antiques fairs, vintage motor rallies, firework displays and the Radio One roadshow.

Weymouth is ideally situated close to other popular towns and resorts such as Portland, Dorchestor, Lyme Regis, Poole and Bournemouth making it an ideal base if you intend to travel around and discover Dorset.
