Barnstaple, Devon

Barnstaple in North Devon dates back to the ninth century, the town that grew on a ford of the River Taw gradually became more important than the original hilltop settlement at Pilton. The town developed as a commercial centre for wool, pottery and metalwork. In 1588 ships sailed from the Port of Barnstaple to join the fight against the Spanish armada.

Today, Barnstaple is a market town with a number of high street brand name stores as well as independent specialist shops. Pannier Market was built in 1855 and is a Victorian style market that is open daily.

There are a number of activities in Barnstaple to entertain all age groups including a cinema, go-karting, leisure centre, ten pin bowling and a theatre. You can also research the history of the town at the town's museums. During the year there is a variety of street entertainment and events such as festivals, fairs and carnivals to keep everyone amused.

Each year the town enters the Britain in Bloom competition with all varities of hanging baskets, floral beds and flower displays brightening up the town and making it a welcoming place for the visitor to enjoy.
