DOWNHAM MARKET’SCITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2001
The year 2000 saw the introduction of the Downham Market Citizen of the Year supported by the Lynn News and Norfolk Citizen. The idea was to ask the members of the public to nominate a local resident of the Town who they felt was worthy of receiving the Trophy to hold for one year and a cash prize of £50. There would also be a further £50 to be donated to a charitable cause of the winners choice. Nominations, with a few words about why you think this person should be chosen as Downham’s Citizen of the Year, should be sent to the Citizen Newsdesk, Limes House, Purfleet Street, King’s Lynn, Norfolk PE30 1HL. Duties of the Citizen of the Year will include helping the Town Mayor to formally open Carnival Day 2001. The following are a few guidelines to nominations which will hopefully “get you thinking”: 1. A person who has given a lot of time to the Town of Downham Market. 2. Young people, including children, who have achieved some acknowledgement of a deed well done. 3. Someone who has shown exceptional courage and/or bravery (e.g. someone who has battled against illness). 4. An unsung hero or heroine who would have gone un-noticed but for this award. Perhaps you have some other ideas. The only person who cannot be nominated is Year 2000 winner, Trevor Goodrum, who has been Caretaker of the Town Hall for a number of years. Trevor has always got a smile on his face and is always pleased to help Town Hall users. Send your nominations in to the Citizen Newsdesk, along with a letter of explaining why you think your candidate should be chosen, to arrive by 5pm on Friday May 11th 2001. The announcement of the winner and presentation of the trophy and prize will be made in the main arena just before the Official Opening of Carnival Day 2001. The cash prizes for this year’s winner have been generously donated by CHEMCURE.
