About the talks and other events

Meetings cover a wide range of interests and visitors are very welcome. You do not have to be a member of the BHI to come to talks and meetings and take an interest in the activities of the Lincs branch of the BHI.

A donation of £3 - is requested from each person at a meeting, members, guests and visitors, towards the cost of room hire, speaker, and refreshments (tea/coffee and biscuits are always provided).

Meetings unless otherwise stated in the programme take place on the second Monday of the month at 19.30 (7.30 pm.)

Venues for Meetings

Unless otherwise stated will be at the Birchwood Leisure Centre. Chosen for its central position and ease of access off the Lincoln by-pass, free car-parking, and facilities.

It is near the Birchwood centre, on Birchwood Avenue - which runs between Skellingthorpe Road and Doddington Road. Both these roads lead off the A46 Lincoln by-pass.

If you are coming from the north along the bypass - turn left at the Skellingthorpe road roundabout - down Skellingthorpe road to the traffic lights - turn right at the traffic lights and go down Birchwood Avenue - the Leisure Centre is on the left with its own carpark in front and war memorial.

If you are coming up the A46 from the south - from the bypass turn right up the Doddington Road, then turn left either up Pershore Way (first turning) which leads into Birchwood Avenue, or up Birchwood Avenue (second turning left). Keep up Birchwood Avenue just past the shops and the Leisure Centre is on the right. (New entrance towards the back).

From centre of Lincoln, Skellingthorpe Road can also be reached off Tritton Road.

The room we are using is on the ground floor with upholstered seats, and tea and coffee making facilities, and an RAF museum (this was RAF Skellingthorpe). Toilets including baby changing and disabled facilities. There is also a soft drinks machine, a licensed bar and free carpark just outside the entrance.

    John Harrison

It was members of the Lincolnshire Branch of the BHI who started the renewed interest in John Harrison's scientific work in designing a clock that could be used for finding longitude at sea.

This book on John Harrison, based on original sources, was first published in 1988 to accompany the exhibition put on by members of the Lincs BHI at the Usher Galley. Since then it has been much used as reference by authors and film makers. It has been much expanded with far more than other recent books on Harrison's life and work in Barrow on Humber and on his scientific work and discoveries.

    • Malcolm Leach showed how he made a complete replica of H.2. - over some 20 years of painstaking research and labour. And no he had no regrets about selling the finished machine.

    • The turret clock tour arranged by John Ablott, was more of a turret clock party - the first stop coincided with a local festival, the second had a precarious method of getting up to the clock, the third, and most interesting was at Alkborough - and was followed by the maze Julian's Bower, and remains of the iron-age fort next to it, then tea at John and Avis Ablott - which was superb and Avis is an expert gardener and gave some of us a home-grown cucumber. And - we were lucky with the weather!

    • The LincsBHI stall at the BHI fair at Upton Hall brought in a good boost to branch funds despite the weather. Mick Floyd organised the stall helped by Margaret and Alex, and also by Heather and Mervyn Hobden. It was nice to meet up with old friends too.

    • 25th Anniversary 2005

2005 was the 25th anniversary of the Lincolnshire branch of the British Horological Institute which was founded in 1980.

girl learning about 19th century watchmaking 2nd May 2005 copyright Heather HobdenAs part of the celebrations and to publicise the branch and its activities, an exhibition was arranged in the Lincolnshire Life Museum on a hot sunny May Bank Holiday weekend, 2005. The interactive events were extremely popular. The picture, shows one of the many young girls who showed great skill on the mid-19th century watchmaker's turns. A similar event is now being planned at the Usher Gallery in August 2008. (20 years after our last sucessful event there.)

    • copyright Heather Hobden Don Unwin "The Thing Maker" returned with another interesting talk about one of his historic reconstructions. He has made amongst other things, the Di Dondi astronomical clock, H.3, and the grand Orrery - and its history - lots of interesting facts new to many of us.

    • Bernard Whitworth's talk showing how skills learned in horology had a valuable application in industry - provoked a great deal of discussion.

    • Local horologists, A.S.H. Wilbourn and Roy Ellis (who runs the shop Timepiece Repairs on Steep Hill) have published their research on "Lincolnshire Clock, Watch and Barometer Makers", ISBN 0 9541584 1 5. It is available from the shop.
